1991 BEAUTY AND THE BEAST

I was less than 4 years old when the original Disney animated movie Beauty and the Beast came out. Although I don’t remember when I first saw the movie, I remember watching it so many times over the years that I can memorize every melody and every character’s expression. I was mesmerized by the enchanted rose, in love with the beautiful castle, inspired by Belle and touched by the Beast.

Today I’d like to talk about my biggest muse: Dita Von Teese – a world famous burlesque performer. Although I don’t recall when I first started following her, I remember the first Strip Strip Hooray show I’ve ever attended. In fact, I will never forget. It was my first ever burlesque show (not counting the Crazy Horse in Paris) and I was so enthralled that I went home that night and bought a ticket for the same show the next day.

There is the common misconception that Geishas are courtesans but the direct translation of the word “Geisha” is actually “Artist”. These women are trained not just in traditional Japanese arts such as music and dancing but are also trained how to sit, move, speak and observe.

The moment I stumbled upon the trailer of The Handmaiden (Still in cinemas!!), the new erotic thriller/drama by famed director Park Chan-wook I knew I would love the movie. Luscious costumes, leather gloves, a historic setting, eerie music, hints of S&M and bondage – in short, all the things I found fascinating.

Being a fashion designer, modern history enthusiast, Chinese and Japanese speaker, this movie was everything that intrigued me all packed into 144 minutes, presented with the most beautiful imagery.
