Yellow is a color that can often have you thinking about basking in the sun or snacking on pineapples by the poolside, but it’s actually a great color to wear year-round. Today, I’m going to show you how to wear yellow in the fall.
HOW TO WEAR YELLOW IN THE FALL
One of the easiest ways to wear yellow in the fall is to pick your color carefully. Shades like canary or pale yellow might channel strong summer feelings, but deeper tones like amber or mustard yellow fit in seamlessly with the changing leaves.
If a full-blown yellow outfit seems too much for you, there are a variety of subtle ways you can incorporate it into an outfit. You can add yellow accents like sunglasses, earrings, or a scarf – they’re the perfect way to brighten up your features.
I realize that most people shy away from wearing this color. So, I figured the best way for us to kick off this post is to recap my favorite color combinations. They’re guaranteed to work for all skin tones!
Yellow + Black
Neutrals can be worn with any color easily, which makes black and yellow an obvious choice. I chose to go with this combo and wore a black vinyl skirt with a chunky mustard knit. It’s a look that’s casual, subtle, and cozy. I’m really loving this pairing with accessories that have gold hardware because it just adds extra shine and dimension. I also think yellow with gray or white can look super chic, which is why I opted for the gray hat.
Yellow + Print
Whether it’s breaking up a fun print with a yellow jacket or subduing a yellow print with a dark solid, combining yellow with prints is a fun and fresh way to wear the color. Stripes and polka dots will always look timeless with yellow, but don’t shy away from experimenting with floral or geometric prints. A yellow skirt with a houndstooth jacket is playful and feminine!
Yellow + Denim
Denim is one of those highly versatile pieces the look great with everything – yellow included. From distressed jeans to a chiffon blouse and boyfriend jeans to a tailored jacket, denim with yellow is no doubt a smart off-duty look. I alway love how yellow sweaters channel a bit of a vintage but cool vibe with denim.
Yellow + Burgundy
As a former designer, I’ve become ultra familiar with the color wheel. You might already know that yellow and purple are complementary colors meaning they create the strongest contrast when juxtaposed. If we take this notion into fashion, then yellow and burgundy is a pairing that inevitably works. Whether you’re opting for a dull yellow with maroon or an orange-based yellow with burgundy, you can feel assured that you’re in the safe zone.
Yellow + Green
The secret to making yellow and green work together is to stick to shades that don’t sit within the same tonality. For example, sea-foam green and pastel yellow might feel like Easter, but olive green and amber is easier on the eyes. If you like paler shades of yellow, then an emerald-based bottom makes more sense and feels fall appropriate.
Yellow + Tan
I consider yellow and tan to be a more sophisticated color combo that works for all ages! Whether it’s a yellow knit with a camel coat or 70s flares with a fitted turtleneck, these two colors together always look a bit like old school romance when worn together.
A full-blown yellow look is not for the faint of heart. If you’re a trendy fashionista, then this one is for you. Two-piece knits, cotton dresses, or menswear-inspired suiting in head-to-toe yellow screams confidence like a true street style star. I find that all-yellow looks are best when paired with accessories in punchy colors – think hot pink shoes or red-trim sunglasses.
