It’s easy to think that winter wear is all about bulky layers, which can often leave you looking frumpy and not chic. One of the easiest solutions is to switch your outerwear, so I’m going to share some tips for how to style trench coats for winter.

HOW TO STYLE TRENCH COATS FOR WINTER

We’ve had several days in December now where one can away with light layers. Although I’m used to a much chillier winter in NYC, it’s nice to be able to walk around the city comfortably and enjoy the holiday lights. Days like this call for none other than my favorite trench coat! You might think of a trench coat as a traditional outerwear piece that’s khaki and belted – and usually worn by detectives. However, they’re anything but boring! Trench coats have morphed into iconic pieces that make up a classic wardrobe over the years.

Though seemingly impractical for frigid temperatures, it’s possible to impeccably style trench coats for winter in three easy steps. Here’s how:

1. Select a hero piece

When wearing trench coats for winter, I prefer to let it be the hero piece. The good news is trench coats no longer just come in your usual double-single-breasted form! Designers have incorporated fresh trends and unique proportions into this garment that it’s much more versatile to style today (as if it wasn’t already before!). One of the season’s biggest fashion trends is tied sleeves, and we’re seeing that not only in shirting but trench coats! I love the oversized fit of the trench coat I’m wearing here – and how the sleeves are tied with inflated pockets. It’s not a piece you’d typically expect from me. However, the more unforeseen fashion is, the more interesting!

2. Pick the right materials

Anyone can style a trench coats winter as long as they pick the right fabrics and proportions. I went with a longer length trench coat that instantly injected a cold weather vibe. This coat with a fun sweater, basic skinny jeans, and heavy duty boots allowed the outfit to come together as winter appropriate. As the temperatures drop even further, you could swap out the sweater for chunky turtleneck and add leather pants.

3. Accent with personal accessories

This ensemble might appear more minimalistic compared to what you’re used to seeing me in. That’s where accessories can make all the difference in the world. Although I picked darker accessories, I made sure they encompassed the tiniest details that still make this outfit “me”. The Louis Vuitton boots, Chanel bag, and mirrored aviators surely added that special touch! Plus, the birds embroidered on the sweater kept the outfit true to my feminine style while everything else added a slight edge.
