Continuing my previous post about my muse, Dita Von Teese, today I talk a little more about femininity and sensuality.

I remember the few weeks after I first saw Dita’s Strip Strip Hooray show, I went on the internet and devoured every interview with Dita I could find. That’s when I began to like her for her beliefs and ways even more than her spectacular shows. First of all, her shows are great for those who like beautiful and eccentric things. For me, I have always had a fascination with burlesque and eccentric things so I was instantly in love. But the way she talks about femininity and seduction is what drew me in even more.

Dita says in her interview with Daily Mail, “I believe we should all cultivate our sensuality. Every day you should do what you need to make you feel good.” And I am firmly behind that. Currently, I am a lingerie designer in NYC and I have always been fascinated with lingerie and sensuality, although it wasn’t till more recent years that I’ve more thoroughly explored my own sense of femininity. I love silk, I love lace and I love stockings. I also love candles, perfumes, high heels and a darker aesthetic. These are things that make me feel good, so I try to surround myself with these items.

With the modern natural beauty and gender equality movements some people seem to view women who are “super sexy” as being objectified by men and derogatory. There seems to also be controversy behind a lot of overly sexualized ad campaigns of lingerie brands like Agent Provocateur. If you ask me, I would love to own every single piece from Agent Provocateur. I would sleep, bathe and wake in Agent Provocateur if I could. Hell, I’ll even say I wear sexy lingerie for men. BUT, I also wear sexy lingerie for myself and simply because I love the way it looks. Who says these have to conflict?

I like being sexy, I like being feminine, I like wearing tight dresses and I love lingerie. Does that make me a weaker or more pretentious woman? To me, it only makes me feel more powerful and true to myself. I’m so glad there is a role model like Dita out there to tell us: you don’t need “permission to like high heels and lipstick”. Be who you are, love what you love, and OWN it.
