How to Wear a Tweed Dress Without Looking too Proper | Of Leather and Lace - Fashion & Travel Blog by Tina Lee

There aren’t many options when you want to wear a dress but the weather refuses to cooperate. This is where the tweed dress comes in! The problem is, tweed dresses can come off too formal, so I wanted to share a run down of how to wear a tweed dress without looking too proper.

I know it isn’t normal for someone to automatically grab a tweed piece in the spring, but I have been wearing so much of it because it keeps me warm. I have to confess, sacrificing warmth and practicality for fashion isn’t always worth it. A tweed dress is great because you can layer other pieces over or under and add accessories that pop out from the texture. If you haven’t tried the tweed dress yet, you really need to grab one soon. Below, I have a few tricks for toning down the sophistication of tweed so that you can wear it anytime.

Mix old with new

Tweed is undeniably considered an old-time fabric. It’s associated with heritage and old English men. As a result, the fastest way to make a tweed dress it-girl worthy is to mix it with new trends. I didn’t add too many trends into the mix here but statement earrings were one of them. Pearl studs would have changed the entire vibe. With the diverse trends that birthed this season, you won’t be short of ideas when it comes to mixing new trends with a tweed dress. But to give you an idea, think about bulky sneakers, pastel pieces, and denim!

Look for a flattering cut

Most tweed dresses come in a-line shapes or sheath styles. And although I see nothing wrong with going the traditional and classy path, I think tweed dresses lose that polished look when you pick one in an unexpected shape. The one I’m wearing can pass for an overall-sheath mixture which makes it more interesting to look at. It also makes layering so much easier! I wore a ruffle, flirty blouse underneath it so that it doesn’t lose that femininity, but deconstructed tops would create a street style type look.

Add high-contrast pieces

I see tweed as a delicate fabric that needs high contrast elements to bring in some edge. For that reason, I decided to wear suede over the knee boots instead of sheer tights and black pumps. Other shoe options that would be perfect are patent leather lace up boots or flat riding boots. You can also add high-contrast pieces by incorporating splashes of color. My ensemble was too neutral for my liking so I knew that my favorite red accessories would add the strong pop I was looking for.
