Is it okay to wear a bralette out? As a lingerie piece, bralettes are a trend that has been around is likely to stick around. I think bralettes are not just great undergarments but also great for wearing out and for layering! So if you’ve ever hesitated to wear a bralette out, here are some great tips and ways to make use of your favorite bralettes!
HOW TO WEAR A BRALETTE OUT
Now, not all bralettes are meant to be worn out. I think some types of bralettes that are risky to wear out include sheer ones and light colored ones (especially white or skin tone). You can overcome the sheerness by wearing a solid bralette underneath it or wearing a nipple pasty (if you’re daring enough!). Here’s a post I wrote about how to wear a lace bodysuit out. It has some tips and tricks to wearing a sheer lingerie piece out that might be helpful!
For this post I chose to style a blue satin set by Thistle and Spire. It is a super comfortable longline bralette that is solid at the front and has mesh and lace inserts. This lingerie set can be completed with briefs, shorts and a cold shoulder cami. Scroll down for how I wore this bralette out and more styling options!

Thistle and Spire is a lingerie brand based in Brooklyn, NY that juxtaposes luxe fabrics with bold lines and architectural details. They often feature beautiful laces as well as amazing strappy pieces. As a former lingerie designer I value quality just as much as the design and Thistle and Spire definitely exceeds in both!

TIP 1: WEAR IT WITH A HIGH-WAISTED BOTTOM
I wore this Devoe satin bralette out in Milan and went shopping around the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. I matched the black lace and mesh inserts to the black lace dress from Maje (currently 50% OFF!). This is the easiest way to wear a bralette out – simply wear it with a high waisted bottom.
The bottoms can be skirts, jeans, palazzo pants or culottes. The key is to choose bralettes that are the right material and color so they don’t look like something that’s only meant for wearing under clothes. Hooks and eyes as the back closure of bralettes are the most telling sign that this is a lingerie piece. But when it’s black instead of a soft color like blush or white, then it doesn’t look so much like an undergarment.

Thank you Thistle and Spire for sponsoring this blue satin set!
TIP 2: WEAR IT OVER A T-SHIRT OR SHIRT
This is a cool way to wear your lingerie as outerwear and it’s been worn by so many celebrities and bloggers! My personal favorite way to wear this is simply a satin black bralette over a white shirt. But you can experiment with mixing materials or colors.
TIP 3: WEAR IT UNDER A STRUCTURED JACKET
This is a perfect look to rock out to a fashion event or party. A structured jacket is often considered more formal, so layering it with a bralette underneath makes it so much more fun.
TIP 4: WEAR IT UNDER A SHEER TOP
This is probably one of my favorite ways to style a bralette. Sheer tops are sophisticated and gorgeous. Black sheer tops are easy to style with black bralettes underneath, especially when your bralette has some special hardware or strappy details. But it doesn’t have to be just black on black! White on black is also very classic and many other colors could also look great layered on top of each other.
TIP 5: WEAR IT UNDER A LOW-CUT T-SHIRT OR SINGLET
With the right t-shirt or singlet you can show off a little bit of your lace or strappy bralette. This is a super casual and comfortable for everyday wear.
