How to Style a Statement Piece

Fashion is all about trying new things so, without trial and error, you’ll never know if a certain item will work on you. I don’t typically obsess over anything too crazy or overboard unless it’s an ornamental shoe or a bold piece of jewelry. But, after I gave into the logo trend, I increasingly became obsessed with the classic Burberry print again. This isn’t a style I would normally grab every day because it’s so identifiable but I loved it enough to buy it. Here are some tips on how to style a statement piece like this.

Refrain from competing elements

A plaid jacket or blazer isn’t anything new or groundbreaking, but the Burberry check has a very distinct look to it which doesn’t come off very neutral to our eyes. That makes it the hero piece in my outfit. Being that I’m also wearing a jacket, an item that takes a ton of real estate, I knew that I shouldn’t add competing elements such as other bold prints or 3D textures. You never want to incorporate something that may steal the show! I decided to go a route I normally wouldn’t and went minimalistic. In my situation, it worked flawlessly.

Work in layers for easy dressing

Spring has already set in for several weeks now, but in certain places like New York City, we still get a sporadic whiff of super cold days. Rocking a statement piece like this is a great opportunity to work in layers for easy transitional dressing. On one hand, you can wear a base of tailored pieces including wide leg trousers and structured pumps. And on another, pops of bright whites and denim will put forward a cool girl look.

Incorporate pops of shine

When you’re mixing a statement piece with neutrals, an outfit can fall flat fast. To prevent that from happening, you can add pops of shine even if that’s in the form of jewelry. I clipped on some bold earrings from MP Wears but there’s also some shine that comes from the patent leather on my newsboy cap.

Stick to your style

My most prized tip is to always stay true to your style. Regardless of what kind of trend you’re trying or what audacious piece you just splurged on, make sure that it’s still very you. And that you can wear it confidently.
