I can’t believe summer is almost at an end and we have to start thinking about fall fashion. But I’m not putting it away my summer slip dresses just yet! Let’s talk about how to style a slip dress for fall so we can get the most use out of our favorite fashion piece!
HOW TO STYLE A SLIP DRESS FOR FALL
At Omoide Yokocho, Tokyo, Japan
So it’s that time of the year where you have to start layering and purchasing warmer clothes in preparation for the winter to come. (Anyone here a GoT fan?) If there is one piece of summer clothing that I’d still want to wear in fall though, it would be my slinky slip dress (now 30% OFF)!
Slip dresses are part of the 90s revival trend that we’ve been seeing a lot in the past year. Kate Moss, in particular, wore the slip dress to perfection! Traditional slips were meant to be worn as an undergarment to prevent chafing and allow the outer dress to lay smoothly. Slips are also often worn as sleepwear. But in the 90s, along with the lingerie as outerwear trend, women started to wear it out. Typically, slip dresses have a less defined waistline and are cut on the bias. Nowadays though, slip dresses come in all different materials and cuts!
Here I’m wearing a For Love and Lemons satin slip dress (30% OFF!). I really love this mustard/olive color and the little stars that embellish the dress. More importantly, it is so comfortable and perfect for summer in Asia because it was SO hot. But now I’m back in New York, and I’ve been wearing it by simply throwing a leather jacket over it. I also want to start experimenting with many other ways to style a slip dress for fall like wearing it over a turtle neck or shirt! 1. CLASSIC // WEAR IT OVER A SIMPLE TURTLE NECK
A good classic turtleneck can do no wrong! And here it does a great job of layering and keeping you warm, while stilling looking super chic.
2. CUTE // WEAR IT WITH FUN SLEEVES
Summer was all about fun and flared sleeves, so why not wear it into fall too? Combine these two summer trends and voila! You have a gorgeous and playful outfit.
3. SEXY // WEAR IT OVER A MESH TOP
I am obsessed with mesh tops. They really do wonders with layering. Whether you plan on wearing it under a slip dress or not owning a mesh top is a must! This mesh top by Pixie Market (that I have also purchased) is also a great one for layering in fall.
4. CASUAL // WEAR IT OVER T-SHIRT & JEANS
For those who want to be comfortable all day long, wearing dress over t-shirts can never go wrong! This outfit is so comfy, so casual yet so street chic!
5. CLASSY // BELT IT
Going out for a date at night? Throw a simple sweater over your sexy lace slip dress then add a belt to define your waist! I’m obsessing over this lace slip by Alice + Olivia and the Gucci belt is definitely on my wish list!
6. TRENDY // WEAR A KIMONO/CARDIGAN OVER IT
If you’ve seen my other post about how to style a silk robe for spring, you’d know I’m obsessed with kimonos. (I also have another post about my brand crush, Carine Gilson, who have the most AMAZING kimonos) Kimonos are huge right now and you can find them everywhere! (Just check out Zara!) They are like the older sister to a slip dress (Loungewear + Sleepwear!). All the fashion editors are loving this chic I-just-rolled-out-of-bed look. Just remember to spice up the outfit with some sexy high heels.
7. CHIC // TUCK IT INTO YOUR PANTS
Who says you actually have to wear your slip dress like a dress? Treat it like a cami and tuck it into your pants! You can create endless combinations out of this as long as there’s some room in your pants for the excess fabric.
8. GIRLY // WEAR A MAXI/MIDI SKIRT OVER IT
Apply the same concept above and wear a midi skirt over your dress and no one would know it was a dress to begin with!
9. WORK // SUIT IT UP
Didn’t think you could wear a slip dress to work? Think again! Simply throw a blazer over the dress, button it up and wrap a belt around it. This is super chic and appropriate for the work place!
