The weather has finally started to align with the season, which means it’s time to get creative with layering. Even though I’ve lived in NYC for several years now, I still haven’t acquired much winter pieces. So, I thought it’d be a great time to share with you how I wear my favorite summer pieces in the fall.
HOW TO LAYER YOUR FAVORITE SUMMER PIECES IN THE FALL
I love my summer dresses, camisoles, and bralettes, but it can be difficult wearing such dainty pieces year-round. Luckily, fall hasn’t really happened, so I wasn’t required to transition my wardrobe just yet. I can finally feel the days getting colder though, which means it’s probably time to prepare for when the temperatures really drop. I’ve been experimenting with layering fabrics these last few weeks and finally figured out how to layer my favorite summer pieces in the fall.
The key to layering like a fashion pro is knowing how thick or thin your layers should be and knowing when to wear one over the other. I highly recommend you mix and match your knits, tops, and dresses until you find a combination that highlights your personal style. If you need some ideas to get started, here’s how I like work summer pieces in the fall:
Ruffle Knit + Overall Dress
I could easily wear this overall leather dress in the summer with a simple lace bralette; however, I made it appropriate for fall by wearing a trendy ruffle sleeve knit underneath it. (I’ve worn this top in summer in a previous post) The dress feels really tough and edgy so the ruffle sleeves add a hint of femininity that makes it feel more like my style. Plus, it allows me to stay warm and wear a dress simultaneously. You can probably tell how thick my dress is based on the structure alone. This makes it important to pick a knit top that isn’t too thick.
T-Shirt + Slip Dress
Like I’ve mentioned in my previous post, How To Style a Slip Dress For Fall, the slip dress and t-shirt combo is nothing new today, but still a great option to wear. As slip dresses become more available in unexpected fabrics, like velvet and lamé, and decorated with unique details, such as lace and tied straps, the combination will continue to look fresh. A simple t-shirt is perfect for a heavier fabric like velvet, but a heavier knit will wear well underneath satin. Think of this as a mashed potatoes and gravy kind of pairing that will always work.
Turtleneck + Cami
If you can’t get enough of your camisoles, you can take them into fall by wearing them over turtlenecks. A thin turtleneck is perfect to wear under something silky and lacy because you can always pile on a thick coat, cardigan, and scarf without feeling too hot. You can also tuck your top into your pants for a fashion editor vibe or wear it loose if you prefer to look casual. The reverse layering also works – a cami underneath an oversized turtleneck. In this case, I recommend wearing a longline cami that flutters out from underneath your sweater.
Button-Up + Bralette
You all know how much I love my bralettes by now. I’ve shown you how you can wear a bralette out in hotter weather and for fall they look great underneath a polished oxford top. Find a crisp white button-up with exaggerated sleeves and be sure not to button it all the way down for a deconstructed look. It feels a little disheveled, but still put together, and pairs beautifully with denim.
