Looking for the most colorful island in Italy? Be sure to visit Burano, a mere 45 minutes from Venice.

BURANO TRAVEL GUIDE

When I saw photos on Instagram of this cute and colorful island called Burano, I knew I had to visit. Burano is a small island that is about 45 minutes by ferry from Venice. Burano is known for all its colorful houses that are inhabited by less than 3000 locals on the island. If you love bright and colorful things and you love taking photos, this is the place to go for a half day visit. (Scroll down for the full Burano travel guide)

HOW TO GET TO BURANO

You can get to Burano by taking the Line 12 Vaporetto (Ferry/Water Taxi) from F.te Nove. The station is located towards the north east of Venice (See map below). We walked there from San Toma and it took about 20 minutes.

WHAT TO DO IN BURANO

1. TAKE PHOTOS

Burano is very picturesque, and has been deemed a paradise for photographers. I would say it’s a paradise for bloggers too! The main thing to do here is, of course, to take photos. Wander around their streets and get lost. You will easily find your way back as Burano is not very big.

2. TRY THE FRESH SEAFOOD

If you come around lunch hours you can dine at one of their quaint restaurants. We came after lunch time so we didn’t eat there but since Burano is a fisherman’s island it’d be a good idea to try their seafood. Al Gatto Nero da Ruggero is a highly rated seafood restaurant that was recommended by Jamie Oliver on his TV show. Snag a table outside and enjoy your view over the canal.

3. SHOP FOR LACE

Alternatively you can also shop for lace, clothes and some accessories. Lace making on the island dates back to the 16th century and is a very time-consuming process. Few of the lace being sold on the island today are handmade, but if you want to buy real handmade Burano lace visit La Perla. It is on the main road on on Via Galuppi 376.

4. VISIT THE LACE MUSEUM

If you are a real lover of lace then you mustn’t miss Museo del Merletto. Here you can learn about the entire history with multiple samples of lace from the 16th century to the 20th century. You can also see the work of lacemakers at the museum demonstrating the craft of lacemaking.

HOW LONG TO SPEND IN BURANO

In my opinion, the best way to visit Burano is to do a half day trip. I would say 2-3 hours on the island is sufficient. If you have more time it could be a great idea to organize a full day trip and go to Burano, Murano and Torcello.
