Tina Travels: Best Way to See Capri - Private Boat Tour Around Capri, Italy | Of Leather and Lace

If this is your first time planning a trip to Capri then you should definitely consider booking a private boat tour around Capri. This is by far the best way to see Capri and its beautiful waters and cliffs.

PRIVATE BOAT TOUR AROUND CAPRI, ITALY

Best Way to See Capri

This was my first time in Capri so I wanted to get an overview of the island. We wanted to take lots of photos and not have to fight for the best photo spot so I decided to charter a private boat. Capri is a mountainous island surrounded by the most beautiful waters. It has many unique caves and natural sites that can all be seen from a private boat tour around Capri. This is a great way to get an overview of the island and all its geographical formations.

WHAT TYPE OF BOAT TO RENT?

For our boat tour we chose to go with a “gozzo” which is a traditional wooden boat that can hold up to 6 people. A gozzo always come with a skipper and is best for small groups. As we were only 2, this was the perfect choice for us! The sun deck is large enough for 2-3 people to lounge comfortably. Our guide was super professional and told us about all the different sites and how they came about.

You can also rent a “Lancia” which comes with an outboard motor so you don’t need a skipper. This is a great option for couples or small groups who want to discover the island in complete privacy.

Other options include renting a large gozzo/lancia, a dinghy (for explorers but not sunbathers as there’s no sun deck), a speedboat or a luxury yacht.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

The sky is the limit when it comes to the cost of chartering a private boat/yacht. But it doesn’t always have to be expensive! Renting a lancia boat usually starts at about 70 euros for 2 hours (no skipper) while a gozzo with a skipper starts at around 130 euros for 2 hours. To get a general overview tour of Capri you need a minimum of 2 hours. However, this doesn’t leave enough time for you to go into the famous Blue Grotto or stop for a dive in the water. We decided to do a 3 hour tour on a gozzo and that cost us a total of 200 euros before tips.

*If you want to go into the Blue Grotto that would cost an extra 14 euros per person for tickets.

Speedboats are a little more expensive than gozzos or lancias and start at around 300 euros for 2.5 hours. Luxury yacht prices are even higher and vary according to the model of the yacht.

Personally I think the gozzo for 200 euros was perfect for us. A gozzo is beautiful, comfortable and photogenic. It is small enough that we can go into all the caves and our guide was friendly and very informative.

IS IT WORTH TO RENT PRIVATE?

Short answer: absolutely! A shared boat tour generally starts at around 17 euros per person while a private boat tour around Capri will set you back at least 130 euros. But if you have a bit of budget to spare, this is absolutely worth it.

On a private gozzo you can sunbathe comfortably and take as many photos as you want. Your guide will explain to you personally all of the attractions and take you into tiny little caves. You can also stop at any point and take a dip in the water. The pace at which you see the island is completely customizable and within your control.

WHICH COMPANY DO YOU RECOMMEND?

After some research, I contacted Gianni’s Boat and they swiftly came back with a detailed response. Their prices were very reasonable and they were very informative so I decided to go with them. Everything went very smoothly, from meeting them to enjoying the boat tour. Our guide Fernando was excellent at navigating the waters, super friendly and very informative. He was also super cooperative when we wanted to take photos and fly a drone.

WHAT ARE SOME SITES TO SEE ALONG THE RIDE?

Along your private boat tour around Capri you will see many cliffs and caves. Amongst them the most famous Blue Grotto. For this you will have to transfer to a smaller boat and pay an entrance fee of 14 euros per person. When we went on our boat tour the Blue Grotto was closed because it was too windy. So sad! Other than the Blue Grotto, there’s also the Faraglioni and the Arco Naturale.
