“I’m going to be in soho around 1 – do you want to come down and do a few shots in the snow?”

And with that question, I present to you my first photo shoot in the snow.

I was born in Taipei, Taiwan and grew up in Brisbane, Australia. Neither of these places ever snowed so I hadn’t experienced extreme cold weather up until I moved to Paris in 2011. Perhaps that was when I first walked in a snow flurry, but New York’s snow flurries (and blizzards!) are the real deal. I love to watch the snow fall from my apartment window, blurring out the rest of the city in the background.

There is something beautiful about the pure white of the snow. It’s as if the Gods in the skies are sprinkling white candy powder, showering us with sweetness and purity. The flecks of snow fall and rest on cars and shrubs, making everything look just a little rounder and cuter – even trash bags. I guess that’s why they say winter is magic. With a few hours of snow, the whole city is transformed.

I enjoy inhaling winter’s crisp morning air, savoring the moments of calm before my day begins. I also appreciate winter at its full ferocity when storms thrash violently through cities with strong winds and heavy snow. I love it all because without the cold of winter you won’t know the sweet warmth of spring.

Stay warm everybody! It’s cold outside.
