“A fire escape is a special kind of emergency exit… [that] provides a method of escape in the event of a fire or other emergency that makes the stairwells inside a building inaccessible. ” (Source)
I like to think of this fire escape as more of an escape from the busy and bustling streets of New York City right underneath me. Being on this fire escape makes me feel like I’m walking in mid air. I feel like a bird overlooking the streets – light, free and unnoticed. Walking on this structure is no easy feat though, especially when I’m donning these 4″ Valentino rockstud booties!
There is something extremely unique and beautiful about objects that are old and used, like this fire escape. It exemplifies history and strength as it endures throughout the years. Exterior fire escapes ceased to be a requirement after the 1968 building code. I wonder if one day fire escapes would cease to exist altogether and these photos would become precious memories and evidence of what the world used to look like?
This last photo is just to show the dangers I go through for an outfit shoot! 😛
