4 Types of Plaid Prints to Know and Wear for Spring | Of Leather and Lace - Fashion & Travel Blog by Tina Lee | gen plaid

Plaid prints are nothing new to us but we’ve seen it worn repeatedly throughout the last few months. Where we don’t typically see plaid is Spring but this year is a little different! With all the plaid-infused outfits I caught sight of through fashion month, I wanted to break it down for you guys. Here are the 4 types of plaid prints you need to know about and wear this season.

The amount of plaid I’ve spotted lately leads me to believe that one can suit up entirely in this print without feeling awkward. I’m loving the resurgence of this trend because it’s feminine and proper but not too preppy. My outfit is an example of how you can incorporate plaid into your spring looks in a way that’s not so clueless. Speaking of my outfit, this is the perfect opportunity to get right into my first print, gen plaid!

1. Glen Plaid

While I was in London, I brought along this glen plaid coat because the lightweight material would be easy for me to layer pieces over or under. It is quite dark however, so that calls for brighter pieces to lighten it up. I incorporated a soft pink ruffle blouse and a statement Prada bag to help with that.

You know you’re wearing glen plaid when you see multiple stripes crossing to create a pattern of variable checks and window pane like patterns. This is probably one of my favorite prints! It’s super popular in jackets, and trousers today.

2. Tartan

Tartan is what most of us are used to seeing in the fall. It’s frequently used in flannels, coats, scarves, and pleated school-girl skirts. This print consists of a few colored bands that criss-cross vertically and horizontally. What you see going up and down or side to side looks exactly the same. Burburry’s pattern is probably one of the most well-known tartan prints around.

3. Gingham

Gingham is trending more than anything else right now because it’s feminine but casual and looks so cute on. I’m a fan of all the gingham skirts I’m seeing currently. This print usually comes in a checkered pattern that is black and white. Modern styles are popping up in various colors like blue and red. It’s distinguished by the even-sized checks and is formed by horizontal and vertical stripes that cross each other.

4. Windowpane Check

The windowpane check is probably the most easy to recognize. It was once popular in men’s suits but we’re starting to see it more in womenswear. It looks exactly as the name implies – check patterns that resemble the panes of a window. The simplicity make it great for base layer pieces like a button down top or a simple blazer.
