Purchasing an expensive gown can be tough because you will usually only wear it once. In that kind of situation, you have to think about if a splurge is worth it. But that doesn’t have to be the case. I’m wearing a dressy gown here and will show you 4 different ways to wear a white gown. You can apply it to any elegant or cocktail dress you might already have sitting in your closet. These different tricks and tips will help you make something fancy less dressy and wearable for casual moments.

1. Wear a top under your gown

Layering dresses over any type of shirt has become a widely popular trend today. When it comes to your gown, you can try this styling trick to dress it down. I wore a black halter top under my elegant white gown so that it wasn’t too revealing on top. My style is classy and chic so this top made sense. If you’re edgier, you can test a collar shirt with oversized sleeves or a turtleneck in a neutral color. You can also wear unique tops with cut outs or a plain t-shirt.

2. Add masculine and contrasty accessories

It’s obvious in the name, but leather accessories are something I’m super passionate about. Since leather gives off such a strong look, it’s great for toning down dressy pieces. I wore a black leather collar and added a leather belt to this gown so that it would contrast against the white ruffles. If you prefer not to add heavy accessories like leather, you can try accessories made of natural materials such as a straw bag or wooden jewelry.

3. Put on a casual layer over

If your gown has a strapless or low cut neckline, but you don’t want to wear a top under it, try wearing a casual jacket. I suggest something like denim jackets, oversized biker jackets, or menswear-style blazers. Belts over jackets are also trending like crazy right now so you can even belt your entire outfit to add more figure. In the winter, you can put on a hoodie or a duster.

4. Pick casual shoes to wear with your dress

High heels elevate jeans and shorts in the same way flats or sneakers tones down dressy gowns and outfits. I don’t love sneakers, but you can try wearing some with your gown. It’s another hot trend of the moment! I prefer loafers with a whimsical print or adornments. Flat leather boots or combat boots can also work in a case like this.
